Ben Witherington III has a few thoughts
about so-called Gospel of Judas

Readers may want to check out the comments of Asbury's New Testament scholar Ben Witherington III on the recent media-frenzy over the Gospel of Judas. His interesting comments are located on his blog, at: http://benwitherington.blogspot.com/2006/04/gospel-of-judas-et-al-part-one.html.

Enjoy.
Best wishes,

Mason, I took a strong look at Witherington's lengthy discussion on The Gospel of Judas, even to the point of printing it up for serious reading. Ben surely knows his stuff and clarifies an abundance of misapprehensions. His observations about historical developments in and around the arrival of the early church is just superb. One wishes that Time Magazine would publish more Witherington-like observations and insights than it does; I'm afraid that all to often the popular understanding of the Gnostic Stuff is thin, factually inaccurate, and downright wrong. Let's hope that as the scholarly dust settles the perrenial appeal of gnosticism toward privileged knowledge will lose its temporary luster. Gnosticism at its shallow bottom is quite boring.
